Northern Asian Bridal Traditions

In Central Asia, a bride is a main function that reflects the area’s wandering background. Although some traditions were outlawed during the 60 to 70 years of Soviet/russian rule, wedding continues to be a substantive matter. This is generally because of the fact that the households in this region are typically big, and each has its own special cultures.

In the past, a pair may spend time with their families before arranging their union. The marriage was usually held in autumn or late summers, when the weather is cooler and inexpensive food is available. The couple’s household had make a huge feast and her female cousins would offer her gifts. In some regions the vicar’s community do pay a dowry to the couple’s home, which could include horses, cattle, money, embroidery or clothing.

The potential man and his male relatives would then kidnap the woman ( in the old nomadic days, by horseback, nowadays, by vehicle). He did then take her to the apartment of his relatives or his family. His parents and elder relatives would try to persuade the wedding to put on a light jacket that signified her authorization of the relationship, or risk pain and even death. This practise, known as ala kachuu, was outlawed during the Russian time, but it appears to be making a return.

On the day of the wedding, the person would be sent with her dowry wagon to the groom’s home. She would become expected to walk that nude, and on the method she was supposed to be showered with pastries and currencies. She also had to croon goodnight music before she left her familial household, such as the popular Kyrgyz music Koshtasi Zhari.
